Rationale

At the 4th HUGO Pacific Meeting & 5th Asia-Pacific Conference of Human Genetics in Pattaya, Thailand, from 27 to 30 October 2002, The Asian SNP consortium, which was set up after the last HUGO meeting, has agreed to initiate the SNP database for Asian populations or Asian SNP database. Each country including Japan, China, South Korea, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, needs to set up its own SNP database More...

What is SNP ?

A SNP (pronouced "s-nip"), or a single nucleotide polymorphism, is the position on the human genome in which a single nucleotide is different in certain individuals. It transmits according to Mendelian law and, thus, can be used to localize an area containing disease-associated genes. An SNP, when located within the gene, may be the causative mutation. It can be used to estimate the risk of developing certain diseases and prognostic markers or predict the response to drug treatment and its side effects (Pharmacogenomics). More...

Aim

The aim of the project is to identify intragenic SNPs, which are frequent (allele frequency of more than 5%) in Thai populations. An SNP database will be completed of all genes identified in the whole human genome and their regulatory regions with allele frequency and LD block patterns in Thai and other (French, Japanese and African) populations.
